We at Merriwood set out to establish an environment for young girls ages 8-15 where they will experience an atmosphere of support so they can learn to their fullest abilities. Through a structured program of instructional activities and a creative elective program, girls find opportunities to build on strengths which gives confidence in developing risk taking skills in the unknown or untried.

Janet and Gordon Miller became involved with the long established Camp Moosilauke in 1938. Ten years later "Mom" Miller had the foresight to develop a camp for girls and started Merriwood in 1949. Thirty-two girls enjoyed the pioneer year. Since those first days the camp has grown under directors/owners Judy and Gary Miller and their children, to the present size of 140. It remains on the same site but expanded facilities have enable the girls to take part in a full instructional program of sports and the arts.

As directors/owners of Camp Merriwood, Gary and Judy Miller are fortunate to have their children taking an active role as third generation directors. Gary has retired from Horace Mann School in New York City after serving the school for twenty-seven years in numerous positions: Dean of Students, Assistant Dean of Guidance, Director of Admissions. Judy, a former educator, is involved in the daily life of the camp. Daughter Susan, Associate Director, has taught for fifteen years in private schools grades 1-5, and has held administrative positions as well. Son Mark is an established water-skiing instructor during the summer. He is also our resident "Tim the Tool Man". In the winter he is a professional snow ski instructor in Park City, Utah, where he also owns an antique ski business. Another son, Greg, has a full time job in sales and marketing in Connecticut, but spends as much time as possible helping with computer systems and marketing.
